Udyam (MSME) Registration: What It Is and How to Apply
Udyam registration is the Government of India's system for registering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It is done online on the official Udyam Registration Portal, is based on self-declaration with Aadhaar, PAN and GSTIN linkage, and, according to the portal, involves no fee. An enterprise's category depends on its investment and turnover.
- The official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in. It states that registration is free and that no private agency is authorised to do it.
- Each category pairs an investment limit with a turnover limit. Revised limits apply from 1 April 2025.
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory is required; PAN and GSTIN are required where applicable.
- No renewal is needed, according to the portal. Details should be updated when they change.
- Informal micro enterprises not registered with GST may use the Udyam Assist Platform through designated agencies.
What is Udyam registration and who can apply?
Udyam registration gives a micro, small or medium enterprise a registration number and certificate, issued online. Proprietorships, partnership firms, HUFs, companies, LLPs, cooperative societies, societies and trusts can apply. The portal's guidance page explains whose Aadhaar is used: the proprietor for a proprietorship, the managing partner for a partnership and the karta for a HUF. Companies, LLPs, cooperative societies, societies and trusts give their GSTIN and PAN along with the Aadhaar number of the organisation or its authorised signatory.
How are enterprises classified as micro, small or medium?
The portal classifies an enterprise using an investment limit and a turnover limit for each category, and it publishes the limits effective from 1 April 2025 alongside the earlier ones. Older articles may still quote the earlier limits. The investment limit relates to plant, machinery or equipment.

The portal's table pairs an investment limit with a turnover limit in every category; the notification issued under the MSMED Act, available through msme.gov.in, is the authority for how the two limits work together, including when an enterprise moves between categories.
How do I apply for Udyam registration online?
Apply on the official Udyam Registration Portal using the Aadhaar, PAN and GSTIN details described above. The portal states that no documents or proof need to be uploaded and that registration rests on self-declaration. Screen labels and the order of fields can change, so follow the options shown on the portal.
- Open the portal. Type udyamregistration.gov.in in the browser; do not follow links from advertisements or messages.
- Start a new registration. Choose the new registration option and enter the Aadhaar number and name of the relevant person (proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory), completing the verification the portal prompts for.
- Enter PAN and GSTIN details. Complete the PAN validation. For organisations, give the PAN and GSTIN details as the form asks.
- Fill in the enterprise details. Provide the details the form asks for, such as name, type of organisation, address and main activity.
- Review, submit and save the certificate. Check the details, submit, and keep the Udyam Registration Number and certificate.
What details should be kept ready?
- Aadhaar number of the person whose Aadhaar the portal requires, and the mobile number linked to it
- PAN, and GSTIN where applicable. The portal states that PAN and GSTIN have been required since 1 April 2021 (guidance page); because they are used in the application, they should be consistent with the PAN and GST records
- Enterprise details the form asks for, such as name, type of organisation, address and activity
- Bank account details, if the form asks for them
Is Udyam registration free, and how do I avoid lookalike sites?
Yes. The portal states that the registration process is free and that there is no fee for filing Udyam registration. It also says that no private online or offline system, service, agency or person is authorised to register enterprises; only the Government of India portal and the Government's Single Window Systems are.
Practical precautions:
- Several paid websites use "Udyam" or "MSME" in their names. If a site asks for a payment to register, it is not the government portal.
- Check that the address ends in gov.in, and type it into the browser instead of following advertisements or messages.
- Do not share OTPs with anyone offering to "complete the registration".
What is the Udyam Assist Platform?
The Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) is for informal micro enterprises that are not registered with the GST authorities and so cannot use the regular portal route. Registration is done through designated agencies, which SIDBI describes as regulated lenders such as banks, non-banking finance companies and microfinance institutions, along with government departments. The enterprise receives a UAP certificate, which SIDBI says the Ministry of MSME and RBI have notified as on par with the Udyam Registration Certificate for priority sector lending. Details are on SIDBI's Udyam Assist Platform page.
Does Udyam registration need renewal?
No. The portal states that there is no need for renewal of registration. Details such as investment, turnover or activity should be kept current on the portal, because classification depends on them. For how MSME status relates to payment timelines to micro and small suppliers, see the notes on Section 43B(h) and Form MSME-1.
